New Year, New you!
I was reflecting on what I was going to do on a personal level to set up 2024 to be a great year.
Yes, I created my business strategic plan.
Yes, I revamped some of my program offerings.
Yes, I renewed my gym membership.
Anyway, here is what I mapped out to try to be a better human in 2024.
1. Prioritize family and friends
One of my friends, Justin Patton, has been an amazing example of what friendship looks like. Last year, I resolved to be more like Justin, and try to be a better friend to my friends. By the way, Justin is an excellent speaker on developing trust across organizations – check him out at https://www.justinpatton.com.
2. Consistent sleep
I guard my sleep like a German Shephard guards a baby. I am not at my best when I take a redeye or drive half the night to get to a program. I head into town a day earlier now, and I try to be better rested. Ensure you get sufficient and quality sleep by establishing a consistent sleep schedule. Aim for 6-8 hours of sleep each night to support overall well-being and cognitive function.
3. Eat a healthy diet
Sometimes I use the excuse “I am on the road, and this is all that is available” or “I am not going to spend more $$ on getting something healthy, so I will just grab whatever is in the hotel lobby.” These are excuses, not good choices.
I know I need fruit, vegetables, lean proteins, and lots of water.
4. Regular exercise
Yes, we all know we need to exercise. That gym app with the exercises I can do while traveling is pretty handy, but I have to OPEN the app to get it, and me, moving.
Whether it is going for a walk, hitting the gym, or practicing yoga, exercise contributes not only to physical health but also boosts mood and reduces stress.
5. Cultivate healthy business relationships
Foster open communication, spend time with people who understand your business. Surround yourself with supportive individuals who contribute positively to your life.
In December, I traveled to Orlando, FL for the National Speakers Association Summit specifically for those speakers who have achieved the CSP designation or are in the speakers’ hall of fame. It was refreshing and invigorating to be with these amazing, talented, and uplifting people. Imagine rooms full of motivational and other specialty speakers! It was amazing and well worth the time.
6. Set realistic goals
I have decided I will not ever be an Olympic gymnast. I cannot even do a cartwheel. So, I am setting reasonable, healthy goals for me.
7. Practice gratitude
I have a gratitude journal and a 5-Minute Gratitude Plan that helps me cultivate a mindset of gratitude by regularly reflecting on the positive aspects of my life. It is so easy to get caught in a trap of negative thinking! This gratitude practice enhances our overall outlook, increases resilience, and improves mental well-being.
8. Learn and grow
I challenged myself last year to skim a business book every day. I lasted about 5 months. What derailed me? I kept wanting to read the entire book. This year I am more focused on reading and thinking. What am I reading now? Material World: The 6 Raw Materials That Shaped Modern Civilization by Ed Conway. I advocate embracing a mindset of continuous learning and personal development. Whether it is acquiring new skills, pursuing hobbies, or expanding your knowledge, intellectual stimulation contributes to a sense of fulfillment and happiness.
Remember, achieving happiness and health is a continuous journey, and it is essential to be patient and compassionate with yourself as you navigate through the challenges and triumphs of the year ahead. Good luck! I am cheering for you!
