GREAT article, Mary! I like to use Mondays to go back over my previous week (daytimer, notes, cards, etc.) and follow up with key contacts while their faces, personalities and biz components are still fresh in my mind. Guess I need to brush up on my penmanship skills, huh?

This instantly pulls beautiful memories to the front and center of my mind. 3 to 4 kids, 2 to 4 horses, previously 2 geese, always 2 to 4 dogs, and a minimum of 4 cats, plus a husband constitute our family. You are so right. Those messes may be the most beautiful parts of my life! Thank you for sharing that. :)

Hi Mary!

Thanks for the very helpful credit card information.

Also - a thought on procrastination: Sometimes people procrastinate because they have a large number of tasks (or one very large task)to do - and feel overwhelmed just thinking about it.

What I do when this happens is repeat over and over to myself (like a mantra):

"One by one, it all gets done!"

This is an ice breaker for me. And then, lo and behold, it does all get done!

All the best always,
Neil

Hi Sheryl,
Thanks so much for your note!

No, this bad customer service experience was NOT an HP! I love my HP printers. :)

I also love that your dog Tippy, raises money for MS. That is such a great cause. Can you tell me more?

Thanks again for your note - I am sure it will help people.
Warmly, Mary

I have been enjoying your newsletter and love the details of your product and customer service stories. Since I work for HP, I was shocked over the 151 phone calls to a major computer manufacturer. That is patience and perseverance above and beyond. Please tell me this was not an HP product and service issue!
FYI for you and your readers... We have a wonderful tool available to all HP employees to help us assist HP customers (our friends, family, or even casual acquaintances). It is called "Voice of the Customer" and allows us to enter details of any customer experience that needs attention. The HP team who runs this service are very responsive and attentive to the issues submitted. Should you have problems in the future, please contact me or someone you know at HP to get attention. You can find an HP connection on LinkedIn or through another Social Media tool.

I had a mad crush on Bobby the dancer!!! We lived in Arizona when my dad was in Vietnam the first time. Lawrence Welk was on the TV and we watched it every week. I always wanted to meet Joanne Castle. I was amazed that she could play the piano without looking at the keys. We even went to the Az State Fair in Phoenix one year because Joanne was playing. Amazing player. Funny what you can remember about those old days.... Aloha, Wata

First, let me say that I just "met" you and I love your blog. I have only just been introduced to blogging as a legitimate art form. I thought it was for kids. As for work-life balance, I do agree that work is healthy. As one of the many (temorarily) unemployed, I have to work hard in my job search and take great care to keep a schedule. My job brought order to my life and a certain sense of meaning - not to say that without work I have no meaning. On the contrary. I have children. I do look forward to having a productive job again to balance my life back out. This time, however, I hope to find something that really lets me stretch and grow into the me I know I can and should be!

I like NASCAR because this is a true example
of the type teamwork many older folks lived by. Do your homework, encourage and support each other in a positive manner. The victory in
these instances will be rewarding for each and
every member of the team! The lessons viewers
can learn - teamwork is NOT a showplace for
unacceptable language, sex, or half-clad hotties.

This reminds me of the Dog and Cat Diary Joke. It's funny but, as your blog entry so aptly put it, dogs in general do have a positive outlook on life. Here's the joke just for everyone's edification:
A Dog's Diary

8:00 am - Dog food! My favourite thing!
9:30 am - A car ride! My favourite thing!
9:40 am - A walk in the park! My favourite thing!
10:40 am - Got rubbed and petted! My favourite thing!
12:00 pm - Milk bones! My favourite thing!
1:00 pm - Played in the yard! My favourite thing!
3:00 pm - Wagged my tail! My favourite thing!
5:00 pm - Dinner! My favourite thing!
7:30 pm - Got to play ball! My favourite thing!
8:00 pm - Wow! Watched TV with the people! My favourite thing!
11:00 pm - Sleeping on the bed! My favourite thing!

A Cat's Diary

Day 972 of my captivity.
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. Evil People!!

Day 973 of my captivity.
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Day 974 of my captivity.
Two workmen came to the house today. As they rested after strengthening the interior of my confines, I sat on one, gently hooking my claws into their clothing. My plan was to cling on until they left, thus escape with them under the cover of their departure. The other workman went outside first and came back smelling strangely after something called a "cigarette". Curses! I'd picked the wrong one! I heard they are coming back again in another week. I will repeat my escape attempt then.

Day 975 of my captivity.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now......

This reminds me of the Dog and Cat Diary Joke. It’s funny but, as your blog entry so aptly put it, dogs in general do have a positive outlook on life. Here’s the joke just for everyone’s edification:
A Dog’s Diary

8:00 am – Dog food! My favourite thing!
9:30 am – A car ride! My favourite thing!
9:40 am – A walk in the park! My favourite thing!
10:40 am – Got rubbed and petted! My favourite thing!
12:00 pm – Milk bones! My favourite thing!
1:00 pm – Played in the yard! My favourite thing!
3:00 pm – Wagged my tail! My favourite thing!
5:00 pm – Dinner! My favourite thing!
7:30 pm – Got to play ball! My favourite thing!
8:00 pm – Wow! Watched TV with the people! My favourite thing!
11:00 pm – Sleeping on the bed! My favourite thing!

A Cat’s Diary

Bravo! Indeed when you love what you do it doesn't feel like "work." Dr. Mary Kelly is the poster child for loving her work! And it shows in everything she does.

And the KEY to loving what you do: do what you do best, naturally. If you're a systematic, detail-oriented introvert embrace those strengths and look for the jobs that USE those talents. Perhaps outside sales is not for you but consider accounting, engineering, systems administration. These roles NEED your talents.

If you're a jump-in-head-first-risk-taking extrovert, shout it from the rooftops that this is how you'll add the most value. Perhaps a routinized position as a cubicle-dweller analyszing financial spreadsheets is, well, not the best idea for you.

Understand and embrace who you are and what you do naturally, find the work that allows you the freedom to be yourself, and you'll be find happiness, success and balance naturally follow.

Thanks, Mary, for these insights!!

I can relate! Substitute the morning paper for laptop, and I'm there. One of my dogs is really into breakfast, and while the other gets pumped up about seeing / smelling what has transpired in the backyard overnight... but enthusiasm is the common thread. Dogs know how to LIVE.

who doesnt want to lead a dog's life? at least MY dogs' life.....i wonder what it would take to have that "the world is amazing!!" feeling every time you woke up, or every time someone walked into the room. Maybe we need to get rid of our watches - dogs cant tell time, so for them, its always or never. A little black and white and a little less grey might not be such a bad thing.

have an amazing day!!
